Most frequently asked questions about HypnoBirthing®

What is HypnoBirthing?

® is a complete childbirth education course designed to give you tools for an easier birth.  It is as much a philosophy as it is a set of techniques.  It is a rewarding, relaxing, and stress free method of birthing that is based on the premise that the majority of birthing women do not need interventions and procedures for safe and healthy birth.

When a woman is properly prepared for birthing physically, mentally and spiritually, she can experience birthing her baby in an easier, more comfortable and often even pain free way.

The goal of HypnoBirthing® is to empower couples to achieve a gentle, relaxing and calm birth that nature intended.

How is HypnoBirthing® different from other Childbirth Education Classes?

Unlike other childbirth methods that teach you how to cope with and manage pain, HypnoBirthing
® is based on the premise that childbirth does not necessarily need to be painful if the mother is properly prepared and relaxed. The course will provide you with information as well as hands on techniques to help you achieve comfortable and relaxed birth.

HypnoBirthing® emphasizes that birth is natural, normal, healthy and safe and works that way for the majority number of cases.  It explains the medically verified Fear-Tension-Pain Cycle and how to release fear, allowing the birthing muscles to work in harmony to easily and comfortably bring the baby into the world.

What do Doctors and Midwives think of HypnoBirthing Burlington?

HypnoBirthing® Burlington has been lovingly suppporting families since 2010. HypnoBirthing® Burlington is known for it's exceptional service and through its dedication to excellence has gained respect of the local caregivers.  Many midwives and doctors continuosly recommend the program to families so that they gain knowledge, education and empowerment to achieve birth fulfillement-awake and alert-in totally relaxed state of mind and body.

HypnoBirthing® incorporates hypnosis in order to achieve a relaxed state for birth.  What is hypnosis?

Many people believe that hypnosis is an unfamiliar state.  In fact this relaxed and focused state is much like day dreaming or being absorbed in a good book or a movie.  You may also be familiar with the feeling from relaxing at the end of a yoga class, performing a repetitive tasks or sometimes driving. It is a naturally occurring state in which the mind and body are extremely relaxed and yet the mind is highly aware and focused.

Will I bark like a dog?

Even though most people are familiar with stage hypnosis shows where individuals act goofy to provide entertainment, they may not be aware that those individuals consent to it and are aware of their actions.  It is a common misconception that the individual in a state of hypnosis is under the control of the hypnotist.  In fact, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.  The individual chooses in accordance with his/her morals to accept or reject the suggestions of the hypnotist. Hypnosis is a natural state of being which we go in and out of throughout the day to rejuvenate and renew.  In hypnosis, positive suggestions are more easily accepted and the mind works for you by helping you to achieve your goals.

Will I remember my birth experience?

Yes! Despite misconceptions and misinformation, you are definitely not unconscious during self-hypnosis.  When you have your baby with HypnoBirthing® , you will be peaceful, in good spirits, totally in control and fully relaxed.  You will be aware of your body's contractions, but will be able to determine the extent to which you feel the surge.  You will experience your birthing in an atmosphere of calm and relaxation, free of the fear and tension that cause unnecessary pain.

How is the birth companion involved?

The Birth Companion of the mother's choice is an integral part of the HypnoBirthing® experience.  He/she practices with the mother in helping to prepare for deep relaxation. During labour the Birth Companion guides the labouring mother through hypnosis prompts, relaxation techniques, deepening methods, and visualizations, provides comfort measures, and joins in welcoming baby.

Can HypnoBirthing® be beneficial to someone who has special circumstances or who must have a C-section?

Absolutely.  The things you will learn in your HypnoBirthing® classes will help you to learn relaxation skills that will be useful to both you and your baby, regardless of your birth experience.  HypnoBirthing® recognizes that birth is not only a physical experience but also a spiritual one.  It guides you and your birth companion to birth in love,  not fear.  If medical intervention is required you will find yourself better able to remain calm and in control.  Moms who have needed C-sections for medical reasons report that they were very relaxed before, during and after the procedure and  recovered very quickly afterward.

Is it true that I will experience a completely pain free birth with HypnoBirthing?

HypnoBirthing® does not promise painless birthing, although many moms do report having pain-free birth, or one they were able to manage easily. When fear and tension constrict the birthing muscles, this results in higher levels of pain.  A relaxed mother who is calm and free of fear will  usually accomplish her birthing in a shorter period of time and with much more comfort. In a state of relaxation her body will produce more endorphins, nature's own relaxants. HypnoBirthing® moms may still experience sensations of tightening or pressure, but most describe their birth experience as working with their body through the sensations, and thus avoiding the excruciating pain that is frequently spoken of by other women.

Speaking from personal experience, having used HypnoBirthing® techniques with the birth of my daughter, I felt some pressure and tightening but no pain.  The sensations were actually very enjoyable and I felt in control and relaxed the entire time.  I loved working with my body and my baby and felt empowered by the miracle of natural birth.  I believe that all mothers and their babies deserve a positive and empowering birth experience.
